Welcome to our Medterra review!
After a round of product sampling, correspondence with the Medterra team, and plenty of snooping around their website, we’ve arrived at an overall rating for this CBD industry leader.
That rating is a whopping 95.9/100, which earns them entry into our highest tier of brands.
As usual, we plug every individual item we assess into a 27-point scale designed to ensure a balanced, comprehensive, and accurate review.
If you’d like to learn more about how we rate brands, we welcome you to consult this simple guide.

How Medterra Got Started
California-based Medterra got its start in 2017 in CEO Jay Hartenbach’s living room.
He and the company’s other co-founders had noticed a lack of transparency and quality education in the CBD marketplace, a void they intended to fill in as disruptive a manner as possible with Medterra.
Committing to these principles early on meant Medterra had to do things the slow and sustainable way, which is exactly what they did, creating a highly comprehensive knowledge base and setting up direct access to customers so they could call the Medterra team with any questions.
They also offered their products at a more affordable price point, which ironically led some customers to doubt the brand’s authenticity and integrity early on.
Knowing that quality and transparency would speak for themselves in the end, Medterra carried on undeterred, and sure enough, they eventually rose to a very high position in the market.
What Makes Medterra Unique?
Medterra differentiates themselves from competitors in three important ways: clinical research participation, synergistic formulations, and affordability.
Clinical Research: Medterra was participating in and/or sponsoring clinical research before it was cool, which is another show of their commitment to actually improving standards in the CBD marketplace.
Partnering with Baylor University in April of 2020, Medterra demonstrated the efficacy of (their) CBD oil for dogs with osteoarthritis.
“We want to do two things,” said CEO Jay Hartenbach when we interviewed him. “One, we want to validate the products that we’re selling are as effective as we think they are, and if they’re not, we need to adjust them. In addition, we want to try new products out that are in development and actually confirm that they are as effective, if not more effective than what we were selling in the past.”
Synergistic Ingredients: Medterra takes a synergistic approach to their formulations, which increases the potential effectiveness of their products.
For example, Medterra works non-cannabinoid botanicals and micronutrients into their formulations, such as vitamin B12, L-theanine, and many others, to appropriate their products for larger, targeted audiences while enhancing the CBD’s effects.
Affordability: Medterra is among the most affordable brands in the industry.
While the natural compulsion in the CBD market and many others is to steer away from the “cheap stuff,” Medterra is an exceptional case.
The fact that they grow their hemp organically, participate actively in the CBD industry’s most prestigious organization—the US Hemp Roundtable—and invest in legitimate studies all reinforce the fact that they’re in business for the right reasons.
Our Medterra Review
Not content to rest on assumptions, we take every review update as seriously as the original, even with well-established brands like Medterra.
While Medterra’s core values, sourcing methods, and other foundational practices remained the same, they have made several changes in several areas over the past year.
As such, we were entirely happy being redundant, re-investigating every item we normally grade with new brands.
Speaking of, our scoring is based on six major criteria: quality, transparency, website experience, customer service, value, and brand value.
All of these points are multifactorial, so we take into account multiple sub-criteria, and it all contributes to an overall score of up to 100 points.
Here’s everything we learned in our Medterra review update, starting with the critical issue of quality.
Quality
Max score = 35 points.
Medterra = 35 points.
Though safe, high-quality ingredients are of course central to end product quality, they alone do not make up the entire user experience.
This is why we also factor in a brand’s CBD extraction method(s), hemp sourcing practices, testing, and even packaging/labeling when grading on quality.
Medterra is one of two brands so far that has earned a perfect score for quality—here’s how.
Product Quality
We had containers of all different shapes and sizes to sample (CBD capsules, tinctures, gummies, topicals, and more), but in every case, we noticed a few commonalities with the packaging.
First, even the smallest containers came with plenty of supplemental information—like an explanation of liposomal delivery or a list of benefits for ginkgo biloba and goji berry, for example—reflecting Medterra’s commitment to education.
This was in addition to basic product info, supplement facts, certification seals, QR codes for third-party lab results, and ingredient lists.
Speaking of ingredients, Medterra enhances many of their CBD products with botanicals and health-affirming micronutrients while keeping away from artificial sweeteners, preservatives, parabens/phthalates, and everything else less upstanding brands hope you’ll gloss over.
All three formulation types we look for—some permutations of “relief,” “relax,” and “active”—were more than accounted for throughout the Medterra product catalog.
The same goes for extract types, as Medterra offers CBD isolate, broad-spectrum, and full-spectrum hemp products.
Finally, Medterra’s hemp is organically grown in Kentucky farms, and plants are tested prior to cultivation to ensure quality and safety.
Testing and Certification
Virtually all noteworthy CBD brands are now meeting this industry-supported standard of having their products tested by third-party laboratories, so we can be a little bit more critical in this category.
For example, Green Scientific, the laboratory that analyzes Medterra’s products, is ISO-17025 accredited, meaning they’ve demonstrated a high level of technical competence in their field.
Medterra also sends some products to ProVerde Laboratories and Sante labs, both of which maintain the same accreditation.
We also award points for the thoroughness of the certificate of analysis (COA) the lab provides, which is a 100/100 in this case because we were easily able to access these important results:
- Cannabinoid amounts/densities
- Pesticide analysis
- Residual solvents
- Microbial analysis
- Heavy metals analysis
Regarding certifications, Medterra is one of the most decorated CBD brands, holding US Hemp Authority, Non-GMO, NASC (National Animal Supplement Council), and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) certifications.
Extraction Method
The way in which the CBD and other cannabinoids are extracted from the plant biomass can influence end product quality, potency, and safety, which is why we care about extraction method.
Medterra uses CO2 extraction, which automatically earns them a full score for this area, since CO2 is the gold standard for its safety.
In fact, Medterra earned a perfect score for the entire quality criterion, which is something we almost never see.
Transparency
Max Score = 12.5 points.
Medterra = 11.625 points.
Brands that intentionally or unintentionally withhold basic information from consumers (or from us) create two problems for themselves.
First, it’s hard to trust a brand that isn’t willing to at least share a little information about their supply chain, testing protocols/results, product info, and their own leadership team.
Secondly, not having the information you need on hand can be a hindrance when shopping online and/or researching CBD brands, which, as competitive as CBD is now, means clicking away and checking out the competition.
For these reasons, we take transparency seriously, and Medterra does as well-here’s how they keep transparency at the forefront.
Info Accessibility
As mentioned, Medterra provides QR codes on all products for easy and quick access to certificates of analysis from testing labs.
We only made a very small deduction (5/100) points for this item because scanning the code doesn’t take you directly to the report for the product (you have to select your batch from a list).
Product information accessibility is superior, as the product pages alone are stuffed with useful and high-quality information, let alone the site’s educational resources.
After our audit of the Medterra site, we also felt that the everyday user can quickly glean most of the brand information highlights (establishment date, leadership, mission, etc.), so they scored well in this area as well.
Supply Chain Transparency
It took a bit of jumping around to piece together the Medterra supply chain, and we never found anything on the site about the extraction method they use, so made a small-to-medium deduction here.
We understand the supply chain isn’t usually the most pressing concern on consumers’ minds, but we reserve a perfect score in this area for brands that neatly package the process for all who want to know.
Website Experience
Max Score = 7.5 points.
Medterra = 7.5 points.
Outdated design is one thing, but when site visitors have to jump through hoops just to do a little research or even make a purchase, the entire experience is broken.
In addition to creating a frictionless ecommerce experience, we reward points to companies that provide educational content covering at least the basics of CBD (what it is, the endocannabinoid system, legality, etc.)
Product Navigation and Purchasing
It was very easy to apply filters, view the exact products we were looking for, select them individually, and (almost) check out.
Both the category pages and individual product pages were clean, informative, and free of any distracting or out-of-place features.
The site was mobile responsive, meaning it performed just as well when we browsed from our smartphones.
As such, Medterra gets full points for product navigation and purchasing.
Site Content
From quippy, well-produced video guides to extensive articles covering all the basics of CBD, Medterra is definitely one of the most helpful brands out there when it comes to informing customers.
They’ve raised the bar on themselves many times in this department, incorporating education into their ad campaigns, even if it means tossing a little shade on the pretenders.
It’s definitely top marks for site content, which rounds out the website experience category with a perfect score.
Customer Service
Max Score = 10 points.
Medterra = 9.25 points.
You can peruse a brand’s lab reports and research their high-quality ingredients all day, but if you can’t get a single question answered by a friendly human being, what’s the use?
Customer service is the ultimate indicator of a CBD brand’s willingness to follow up on their claims.
As such, we reward brands for the number and availability of contact options they have, the responsiveness of support staff, and how accommodating their shipping and return policies are.
Contact Options and Responsiveness
Medterra has phone, live chat, and email support, which are the three services we require to reward a full score for this point.
The phone number provided to all customers brings you directly to a customer service representative (no robots and/or number-pressing), and our wait time was a very reasonable 1.5 minutes or so.
Response time was very similar—about two minutes—for the live chat, and we were once again connected with a human representative.
Overall, this is exactly what we want to see in the customer support department.
Shipping and Return Policies
According to their shipping and returns page, Medterra can ship orders placed before 11am PST on the same business day.
Multiple shipping options are available, but standard ground orders typically arrive within 2-3 days after Medterra sends products out.
Medterra provides full refunds (minus shipping) within 30 days of purchasing to customers who aren’t satisfied with their product(s).
These standards are right in line with most other top-tier brands we’ve reviewed, earning Medterra full points for shipping and return policies.
Value
Max Score = 10 points.
Medterra = 8.31 points.
This ranking factor measures two things: the absolute cost of a brand’s CBD products and the quality of the ingredients relative to that price.
Pricing and Ingredient Quality
A one-month supply of Medterra’s full-spectrum CBD + THC tincture retails for $99.99, which earns a 32.5/100 for value according to our price rating scale.
Keep in mind, the vast majority of brands score 50 or lower on this point, and Medterra was able to recoup a fair chunk of points on the quality relative to price end, which they aced.
We awarded the brand full points for quality because of their high ratio of minor cannabinoids to CBD, use of supportive botanicals, and clean ingredient lists.
Brand Value
Max Score = 25 points.
Medterra = 24.25 points.
Finally, brand value is anything that contributes to the footprint a particular brand leaves on the CBD industry, their local communities, and the world at large.
This broad category encompasses research and legislative contributions, philanthropy, product innovations, and sometimes, just doing the same thing every other brand does in a better, more sustainable way.
Product Innovation
Medterra’s True Full-Spectrum Line, which boasts a 5:1 ratio of CBD to minor cannabinoids and 2mg of THC per serving, brings heavy-hitting value and potency to customers in a completely legitimate package.
Not to mention, the brand has developed CBD gum, among other avantgarde buying options for consumers of all preferences, earning them full points for product innovation.
Community, Research, and Legislative Investment
Between their US Hemp Roundtable membership, generous donations to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and discounts for military members and the disabled, Medterra earned fairly strong scores for community/industry involvement and philanthropy ranking factors.
We also credit them for their aforementioned research participation, especially since the work they’ve been doing provides actionable insights for CBD manufacturers looking to address pressing health and wellness concerns.
Finally, the Medterra roster is ridiculously stacked when it comes to experienced business development, marketing, and finance leaders in the health and wealthness industry and otherwise.
Between the CFO, COO, CRO, and several more “Os,” the leadership team has dozens of years of experience making big plays for such high-profile companies as Callaway Golf, PepsiCo, Pfizer, and more.
Our Medterra Overall Rating
All tallied, Medterra earns an overall rating of 95.94, which is significantly above the average, and for good reason.
Here are some key takeaways to sum up our review:
- Excellent product quality, safety, and testing standards.
- Organically grown hemp with a high ratio of CBD to minor cannabinoids.
- Affordable products.
- Excellent consumer education and transparency.
- Deep institutional knowledge.
- Strong commitment to CBD research and legislation.
Considering the fact that they didn’t lose more than a full point in any category (other than value), we’re hard-pressed to call out areas of improvement for Medterra.
However, maintaining your status as a market leader requires constant innovation and investment, so we’ll be watching to make sure Medterra fulfills this calling.
Until then and after, we highly recommend their products to anyone looking for CBD products of any concentration, extract type, and delivery method.

Medterra Pain Cream
Looking to relieve that nagging pain?
Medterra’s OTC-registered Pain Cream with 1000mg of CBD is loaded with CBD, supporting cannabinoids, and plenty of botanicals to address discomfort.
Our testers felt significant relief soon after applying and for several hours after.
The best product from Medterra according to our team, is the Medterra 1000mg Pain Cream.
Another one of Medterra’s best products is their 3000mg CBD Tincture.

Medterra CBD Tincture 3000mg
Sometimes simple is best.
Medterra’s 3000mg CBD Tincture is a highly concentrated oil to help you get your daily dose of CBD.
Our team loved the mild coconut flavor and the calming effects.
Another favorite of ours was the Stress Support Gummies from Medterra’s wellness line.

Medterra Stress Support Gummies
Targeting stress and immunity at the same time requires a sound formulation, which is exactly what drives these stress support gummies.
Manuka honey, lavender, and L-theanine join CBD and supportive cannabinoids to support both of these uses in a natural, balanced way.
They taste great, the CBD concentration is above average, and our testers found them effective for promoting a sense of calm.
Medterra Product Reviews
Concentration
We sampled the 1500mg Full-Spectrum CBD + THC tincture (in Citrus), the 3000mg THC-free tincture, and the 1000mg Antioxidant Boost Elixir.
Here is how the cannabinoids measured up according to the certificates of analysis for these products:
1500mg Full-Spectrum CBD + THC (per bottle): 45.5mg of delta-9 THC, 1,541.7mg of CBD, with CBG, CBN, and CBC also detected.
3000mg THC-free tincture (per bottle): Non-detectable levels of delta-9 and delta-8 THC and 3,304.3mg of CBD.
1000mg Antioxidant Boost Elixir (per bottle): <1.6mg of delta-9 THC, 1,230mg of CBD, and approximately 140mg of CBG, CBN, CBC, and several other detected cannabinoids.
No red flags were tripped here; the THC-free tincture came back with non-detectable levels of THC, all three over-delivered on CBD content, and the supporting cannabinoid content was fairly generous.
Moreover, the Antioxidant Boost Elixir was rich in non-cannabinoid botanicals, but more on that in the ingredients section.
Value
The 1500mg True Full-Spectrum CBD + THC tincture retails for $99.99, which reduces to just under $0.07/mg.
The 3000mg THC-Free Tincture retails for $132.99, which reduces to $0.04/mg.
Finally, the 1000mg Antioxidant Boost Elixir retails for $69.99, reducing to $0.07/mg.
Bulk buyers looking to sidestep THC have a serious deal to take advantage of with the 3000mg THC-Free Tincture, and the other two are surprisingly competitive for the high cannabinoid density (true full-spectrum) and use of supporting botanicals (antioxidant boost).
Finally, taking Medterra’s trustworthy reputation into account, we consider all three products a strong value, though not at the very top of the spectrum
Packaging
The tinctures all come in a small box containing the darkly tinted bottles, with the exception of the Full-Spectrum THC + CBD tincture, which arrived in a matte white bottle.
The dropper lids gave us no grief, all of the information we wanted (and more) was available on packaging, and everything held up throughout our entire use of the products
As such, we’re awarding top marks for packaging here
Ingredients
Here are the ingredient lists for the CBD oils we sampled:
1500mg Full-Spectrum THC + CBD tincture (citrus): Full-spectrum hemp extract (CBD, THC, CBG, CBN, CBC, CBDV, natural terpenes), organic MCT oil (medium chain triglycerides), natural flavors, stevia extract
3000mg THC-Free Tincture: Cannabidiol (CBD), organic medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil.
1000mg Antioxidant Boost Elixir: Broad-spectrum hemp extract (CBD, CBG, CBN, CBC, CBDV, natural terpenes), purified water, glycerine, medium-chain triglyceride oil, natural flavors, sunflower lecithin, malic acid and nisin as natural preservatives, vitamin E (mixed tocopherols), monk fruit extract
None of these products contain artificial sweeteners, fillers, or other potentially harmful ingredients.
Moreover, the cannabinoid profiles for the full-spectrum tincture and Antioxidant Boost Elixir are robust, and the latter is reinforced by sea buckthorn and camu camu.
Taste and Texture
The citrus flavor of the Full-Spectrum THC + CBD texture s pleasant, but just shocking enough to the palate to cover up the bitter hemp flavor fairly effectively.
Both in texture and flavor, the THC-free tincture was
MCT oil is generally flavorless, and CBD without the nying cannabinoids and terpenes is much less bitter, so that’s what we were left with (and who would complain?).
In terms of flavor, the Antioxidant Boost Elixir was probably our least favorite because it was very tart.
We acclimated slightly after a few uses, and for people who love tart fruit and sour candy, this would actually be a great fit
Effectiveness
We only assessed the effectiveness of the THC-free tincture as well as the full-spectrum THC + CBD tincture, since the immune support product is more of a long-haul approach
We were wrong to lower expectations for the THC-free product, which surprised us in a number of ways.
First, we noticed after the first use (it happened to be in the evening) that we fell asleep with much less time.
Our testers also noticed that it was much easier to resist distractions at home and focus on the task at hand.
While we didn’t notice much in the arena of physical discomfort, these other benefits combined to greatly improve energy and focus throughout the day.
On the other hand, the Full-Spectrum CBD + THC tincture was highly effective for stress as well as post-exercise recovery.
Not unlike some of the products we’ve sampled from Medterra subsidiary Five CBD, the above average THC content and supporting cannabinoids really came into play here.
We were calmer, more focused, and ready to workout harder for several days in a row.
Overall, both products delivered on some of the key promises made by CBD brands across the spectrum
Pros & Cons
Let’s start with the pros for these three tinctures:
All-natural ingredients with no artificial sweeteners
Effective at improving sleep, stress, focus, and post-workout soreness.
Affordable
Backed by high testing and quality standards
And now the con:
Very tart flavor (Antioxidant Boost Elixir only)
Medterra CBD Gummies Review

Concentration
Value
Overall, these are an excellent value to be sure
Packaging
Both of these products come in blocky, white containers with child-proof, purple lids
As with their other products, Medterra includes additional information about the added ingredients (elderberry, zinc, etc.) on each of these products to help bring newer consumers up to speed
This is on top of the ample product info, ingredient lists, certification seals, and QR codes for third-party lab results
The packaging was durable, attractive, and informative.
Ingredients
Here are the ingredient lists:
Immune Boost: Broad-spectrum hemp extract (CBD, CBG, CBN, CBC, CBDV, natural terpenes, elderberry, vitamin C (as ascorbic acid), zinc (as zinc gluconate), tapioca syrup, sugar, water, pectin, sodium citrate, citric acid, carnauba wax.
Stress Support: Broad-spectrum hemp extract (CBD, CBG, CBN CBC, CBDV, natural terpenes), manuka honey, lavender, L-theanine, tapioca syrup, sugar, water, pectin, sodium citrate, citric acid, natural flavors, beet juice concentrate for color, carnauba wax.
These ingredient lists are exactly what the labels promise—clean, safe, and botanically enhanced.
Taste
The acidity of the ascorbic acid and the sweetness of the sugar did a decent job competing with the bitterness of the hemp flavor in the case of the elderberry-flavored immune boost gummies, but they were still a little intense with these three extremes going on.
Overall, we didn’t mind it, but we can see some palates being overwhelmed.
The strawberry of the stress support gummies was delicious, and the aftertaste was only slightly bitter.
Overall, both gummies were tasty enough to not interfere with getting our required dosage in.
Effectiveness
We don’t typically review the short-term effects of immunity-focused products, considering they are designed to have more subtle effects over the long term, but we will comment in this case that we still noticed a mellowing effect with the Immune Support gummies.
It didn’t overshadow the mellowing capabilities of the Full-Spectrum CBD + THC tinctures, but we still noticed a sense of calm for a couple hours after taking 2-3 gummies.
As expected, the Stress Support gummies were stronger in this regard, and in the case of one of our testers, they eliminated a two-day-strong eye twitch, which is always a welcome relief.
We also found them very valuable for work productivity in a more direct sense, as we were able to put on a little music and enter a “flow state” for a few hours after having two Stress Support gummies—no phone, no other screens.
Overall, we noticed distinct effects with each product, and would recommend them to anyone looking to get through a stressful day.
Pros & Cons
Let’s start with the pros:
- Highly affordable for the nutritional density
- Effective for stress and focus
- Clean formulation
- Decent concentration per gummy
And now the cons:
- Intense flavor (elderberry)
Medterra CBD Pain Cream Review

Concentration
We sampled the 1.7oz, 1000mg (588.24mg/oz) Medterra Pain Cream, which is an OTC-registered product, meaning that it is intended to treat pain.
According to the certificate of analysis, our product contains 1,108.5mg of CBD, and no other cannabinoids (including all forms of THC) were detected.
This much higher than average concentration paired with the OTC registration adds value, legitimacy, and relevance for customers dealing with stubborn pain.
Value
This product retails for $54.99, which reduces to about $0.055/mg of CBD
Once again, we see Medterra take it much easier on the markup then most competitors, who tend to charge north of a dime a milligram for just about any topical.
The lack of supporting cannabinoids makes this a little easier for Medterra, but still, it’s an excellent value for a highly potent CBD topical.
Packaging
This pain cream comes in a pump bottle with a clear plastic cap.
The labeling includes drug fasts, intended uses, directions, ingredient lists (active and inactive), a QR code for scanning lab results, and safety warnings.
The pump was cooperative and consistent in how much product it provided, and the rest of the packaging held up throughout our entire use of the product.
Ingredients
Here is the ingredient list for this pain cream: Arnica Montana 1X HPUS 7%, Menthol 4%, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice*, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Bentonite, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Caprylyl Glycol, Cannabidiol (CBD), Cetearyl Alcohol, Citric Acid, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Ethylhexylglycerin, Glycerin*, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Extract, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil*, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Extract Phenoxyethanol, Polyglyceryl-10 Oleate, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Tocopherol, Water (Aqua, Eau), Xanthan Gum, Sorbitan Olivate.
Loaded with botanical oils and (very) easy on the preservatives, this is an excellent ingredient list for a gentle, yet effective pain cream.
There are no parabens, phthalates, or potentially irritating surfactants of any kind, earning this product top marks for ingredient quality.
Scent and Texture
As always, menthol and peppermint run the show scent-wise, and the texture was slightly more watery than most CBD topicals we’ve tried.
Since the cream held its shape on the applied area before being massaged in (instead of dripping everywhere), we don’t consider this lower viscosity an issue.
The cream was fully worked into the tissue with about fifteen seconds of massaging, leaving no residual goop on the surface.
Overall, the scent and texture were consistent with our expectations for high-tier CBD brands, never interfering with our use of the product.
Effectiveness
In an acute sense, this product is slightly less effective at blocking out the pain with tingling and numbness than some others we’ve tried, but it had much greater staying power.
Especially when we applied to the same treatment area for several days in a row, we noticed that pain and soreness was markedly decreased for hours after treatment.
In a few cases, we even felt less soreness in the injured area upon waking up in the morning.
As such, we’re filing this product under serious, stubborn injury relief, not weekend warrior knocks.
Pros & Cons
Let’s start with the pros:
- Gentle, effective ingredients
- Excellent price point
- High concentration
- Pain relief window outlasts competition
And now the cons:
- Less powerful numbness/tingling to block acute pain

Conclusion
After reviewing Medterra, our team is coming away very impressed with the brand’s products and its operation.
Medterra is vertically integrated and controls its entire supply chain, starting with its hemp grown in Kentucky.
The brand uses CO2 to extract CBD and uses third-party labs to verify the safety of their products.
Speaking of products, our team is amazed at how affordable they are.
We believe Medterra has done an excellent job of creating useful products with synergistic ingredients while still making them accessible to as many people as possible with regard to price.
With this said, we are more than happy to recommend Medterra.
